Abstrakt     Endoscopic ultrasonography is an imaging technique that combines endoscopy and ultraonograpiiy-. r1n ultrasound transducer is mounted on the tip of the endoscope, allowing determination of the five echo layers of gastrointestinal tract and accurate imaging of lesions and tumors located within and adjacent to the gastrointestinal wall. Most gastrointestinal cancers begin growing in the mucosal layer and invade more deeply as they progress, so EUS is becoming a powerful clinical tool for gastrointestinal cancer staging. Submucosal lesions are also one of primary indications for EUS. EUS can clearly demonstrate early stages of esophageal and gastric varices. Lower frequencies allow us to observe organs and tissues adjacent to gastrointestinal wall ( pancreas, biliary system ) EUS is used for the local staging of potentially resectable pancreatic cancer, provides safe and relatively noninvasive method of evaluating the pancreatic parenchima and the ducts (evaluation of chronic pancreatitis, cystic lesions). It is very sensitive in the preoperative localization of endocrine tumors of the pancreas. One of the primary indications for EUS is detection of common bille duct stones. Interventional EUS is expected even further to developed over next years.
