Abstrakt | Diabetic neuropathy is the most common and troublesome complication of diabetes mellitus. It may be silent and go undetected while exercising its ravages. It is a heterogeneous disorder that encompasses a wide range of abnormalities affecting proximal and distal peripheral sensory and motor nerves, symmetrical length dependent sensory neuropathy being most frequent abnormality. C- and A-delta fibres are affected, frequently subclinically, and psychophysical assessment of small nerve fibres is mandatory. The treatment of painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy is troublesome and limited by the range of effective treatments available. An optimal control of diabetes is important, and simple analgesics such as aspirin and paracetamol may be beneficial. Further relief of symptoms may be achieved with tricyclic antidepressants and anticonvulsants.. Physical techniques are unfortunately frequently in the background. In our study, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation was found a promising tool in treating painful diabetic neuropathies. | |
