Abstract     Venous thrombembolism (VTE) is a significant complication after surgery. At least half of all patients who undergo major orthopaedic surgery develop VTE if not given prophylactic treatment. Low molecular weight heparin is effective antithrombotic drug. Thromboprophylaxis is usally given for 1 week, yet the risk of VTE persi sts for several weeks after hip replacement surgery and in patients with malignancy.. There is a need for extended out-of-hospital prophylaxis.
