Abstract		Until recently, the opinion prevailed that breast cancer of stage I and II was a local disease and therefore operable. In the course of the last decades, the principles have been changing. The present paper reports on the survival of 1686 patients with breast cancer of stage I and II, treated between 1976 and 1999 at the Oncology Institute in Ljubljana according to various methods. The results of these changes are shown in the table.
