Abstract | The role and impact of radiotherapy (RT) on breast cancer therapy is reviewed. For intraductal cancer, therapy options are breast-conserving surgery (CS) with RT, mastectomy and CS only in selected cases. The local management of early stage breast cancer includes modified radical mastectomy with or without reconstruction or CS with RT. Randomized trials have shown equivalent local control and survival. Despite all efforts, the group of patients with invasive disease not requiring RT after CS has not been identified. Postmastectomy RT is necessary in high-risk patients. In locally advanced disease, local treatment is RT with or without surgery. In metastatic disease, RT improves the quality of life. | |
