Abstrakt | Buckwheat products represent traditional and very popular food in Slovenia. Ingestion of buckwheat flour foods has recently resulted in human poisonings due to contamination of buckwheat grain with seeds of jimsonweed (Datura stramonium L.); a poisonous plant which may grow among buckwheat as a weed. Constituents of jimsonweed include among others very toxic alkaloids: atropine and scopolamine. The following article summarises the main features of buckwheat use in Slovenia, main features of jimsonweed, together with properties and effects of atropine and scopolamine.
