Abstract     Background. Vaginal ultrasound examinations is recently employed also in early pregnancy. Thus aprobe with higherfreguency, better detection capacity and more direct approach than the one in transabdominal examination is made to use. Methods and results. Vaginal probes of freguency from 5 to 7.5 megahertz are used in examinations. This method has been practiced in our department for two years. During this period 290 pregnant women from the completed 7th to the completed 15th week of pregnancy were examined. This method is chosen when a transabdominal examination yields no useful echograms. However, occasionaly not all anatomic structures can be demonstrated as desired by this method. Conclusions. The examination with the use of the vaginal ultrasound probe enables good identification and establishment of some anatomical structures as early as in the embryonal and early foetal stages. It is expected that it will be soon established whether vaginosonography is an adequate and judicious routine examination for all pregnant women.
