Abstract     The external fixator is a simple method of fracture stabilization. Its application demands knowledge of the basic mechanical and technical principles. This method is also basis of functioning of the Locking Stabile Plates (Mathys). The review article presents instructions to understand those principles. At the fracture stabilisation the fixator bone elements (Steinmann nails, Schanz screws) are fixed with rods or rings by connecting elements. There are two methods of fixator application: the first, where all the fragments are reduced and the fixator is applied. This is also the method of applying the LCP plates and screws. With the second, modular application teh fragments are first fixed by modules - small fixator parts of bone elements and rods. In the second step the fragments are reduced by maneuvering with the modules. At the end the modules are stabilized with each other. The external fixator represents a safe way to stabilize the fracture because of its simle application and its position outside of the patients body.
