Abstract		Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality in Europe in general, as well as in Slovenia and Croatia. Many risk factors for development of these diseases are well known, and some of them can be influenced (primary prevention). Based on the joint European recommendations for the prevention of coronary heart disease in cliucal practice, slightly modified Slovene guidelines have been adopted. Their most important characteristic is that they provide the starting point for the determination of the absolute global coronary risk for planning and implementation of the intervention strategy. In the present study, we determined the global coronary risk by means of a modified screening questionnaire which was performed on the members of "Drustvo za srce" (Heart Society) in the community of Metlika, Republic of Slovenia. In the group of men, by means of a screening questionnaire, we found 68%, and by a more precise evaluation, as many as 81% of men with high coronary risk. At the same time, the screening detected 50% of women with high coronary risk, and a more precise evaluation (extended questionnaire) showed even 75 % of women with high coronary risk.
