Abstract     Cauda equina lesions cause important lower urinary tract (LUT) dysfunetion, but published data are limited. We report LUT function in 67 patients with chronic lesions. A urinary function questionnaire, neurological examination, quantitative anal sphincter electromyography, and urodynamics were applied. Severe LUT dysfunction was present in 13%, moderate in 32% and mild in 43%, and interfered with daily life of 88% patients. In 54% a postvoid residual was found. On cystometry detrusor hypoactivity was found in 65%, detrusor hyleractivity in 45%, and reduced bladder capacity in 7% of our patients. Our study demonstrated significant LUT dysfunction, and proposed cystometric surveillance in patients with chronic cauda equina lesions.
