| Abstract | The use of rescue helicopter is necessary, when it has clear advantages for victims in comparison with ground rescue and transport. Helicopters should work within the existing emergency medical system (EMS) and must be staffed by appropriate medically-trained personnel. In Slovenia, there are two operating helicopter rescue and EMS services: ◆ Helicopter Mountain Rescue Service (HMRS), performed by Mountain Rescue Service of Slovenia (MRSS). It operates mostly in mountains and other difficult accessible sites, ◆ Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) by »pilot project« from Ministry of Health, performed by Prehospital Unit (PHU) of Primary Health Center of region of Gorenjska. There are no medicine purpose only helicopters in Slovenia at the moment, both services use police and army helicopters. The differences between both services are of practical importance: ◆ Advantage of HMRS: ability to operate even in most difficult accessible sites (steep slopes, mountain walls, canyons etc.) with winch rescue technique. ◆ Disadvantages of HMRS: longer activation time because of some byrocratic complications and because of »pick-up« system of collecting rescuers and doctors; no medical technician on board. ◆ Advantages of HEMS: faster activation, better equipped and skilled and numerous medical crew, better integration in EMS. ◆ Disadvantages of HEMS: operating only on locations, where landing is possible. According to geographical and other characteristics of Slovenia both described services play an important role in providing rescue and EMS. The goals for future are: putting together both services on the basis of their advantages, getting medical use only helicopters, better integration of service in EMS system in Slovenia. | |
