Abstract | Oncologic emergencies are structural or metabolic complications related to cancer or its treatment, which require immediate action to prevent the suffering and and increased mortality associated with them. Early recognition and prompt control are two major factors in dealing with oncologic emergencies. Emergencies in cancer can occur at any stage of the disease processor its treatment and it is very important that caregivers are able to recognize and manage these emergencies. They are categorized by their mechanisn of action as obstructive, metabolic and infiltrative. This article discusses four oncologic emergencies: spinal cord compression, superior vena cava syndrome, airway obstruction and neutropenic fever. | |
