Abstract     The protozoon parasite Cryptosporidium is a pathogen that infects several wild and domestic animals and humans. It can cause acute or chronic diarrhoea or even life-threatening disease in immunocompromised individuals. The oocysts of this parasite are excreted into the environment by the faeces of the infected host. Upon excretion, the oocysts are immediately infectious. Humans can become infected either directly through the contact with infected animals or humans, or indirectly by contaminated water or food. In the absence of effective therapeutics against this parasite, preventing the infection by identifying the sources and routes of transmission is very important. Limitations associated with conventional diagnostic methods for cryptosporidiosis based on morphological features is their inability to discriminate between different species and genotypes, which is necessary to determine the risk to human health. Molecular biology-based techniques gave the insight into the genetical variability of this parasite and improved understanding of its epidemiology. In the present study, molecular biology-based techniques were used to determine the species and genotypes of Cryptosporidium that infect humans in Slovenia. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
