Abstract     The analysis of the plasmid profile as an epidemiological method is more and more valued. The method is simple, reproducible and relatively cheap. Author used it in an investigation of the epidemic which was caused by Salmonella enteritidis. The analysis of the plasmid profile of the isolates showed that the epidemic isolates had the same plasmid profile. This was thrue also with isolates from the epidemic in Dobana (other place and time). Because of this the method has limited value as anepidemiological tool and is aplicable only as one of the epidemiologic methods in connection with all others. The method was proved to be as successful in discriminating epidemic from nonepidemic isolates. A hospital and non-hospital morbidity and mortality due to digestive diseases in Slovenia in the years 1977 and 1989 are presented, compared with data in some developed countries. Between the years 1977 and 1989 digestive diseases in Slovenia significantly decreased, per 30.6 per cent in the primary health care and per 8.6 per cent in the hospital health care. Mortality due to digestive diseases did not increas significantly in this time period. The highest morbidity and the highest increase in morbidity between these two years in the hospital health care were due to the galstones. The highest mortality was due to the liver cirrhosis which significantly increased between the years 1977 and 1989. Because of the high costs of treatment and premature deaths chronic digestive diseases represent an important health and social problem. With preventive measures and better health education of entire population the morbidity and mortality due to digestive diseases could be decreased.
