Abstract     Background. The aim of antihypertensive treatment is to reduce the total cardiovascular risk. Therefore, arterial hypertension (AH) should be treated in childhood, with proper surveillance and follow-up being mandatory. Children with AH later need appropriate referral to adult physicians. Inadequate treatment of AH, which also occurs in developed countries, causes considerable health and economic damage. In this area much work still needs to be done by society as a whole. Conclusions. Some general principles of the treatment of adult and childhood hypertension are discussed in this article. The treatment of some special forms of AH in children (hypertensive emergencies, essencial AH, AH with overactivity of the renin-angiotensin system, AH in chronic renal failure, in young athletes, neonates, phaeochromocytoma and in some monogenic forms of AH) is mentioned. The mechanisms of antihypertensive drugs, their side effects and doses are not discussed in detail.
