Abstract     Arterial hypertension is one of the most common chronic diseases in the industrialised world. Hypertension may itself cause renal damage and it is also common in all types of renal disease. If essential hypertension causes renal injury, this condition is termed hypertensive nephropathy. The diagnosis is usually based solely on clinical grounds in everyday practice. Hypertensive nephropathy can also cause end-stage renal failure. The incidenceof end-stage renal failure due to hypertension has increased from 1990 to 1999 in Europe, this increase mainly involving the age group older than 65 years. It is also important that the incidence of end-stage renal failure due to hypertension in younger patients has remained unchanged. It can be concluded that hypertensive nephropathy continues to be an important cause of end-stage renal failure.
