Abstract     Since it is impossible to prevent all potentially dangerous exposure to harmful substances, early effective treatment of the child after contact with a harmful substances is of prime importance. Preventive measures must become an integral part of preventive counselling given by child health care providers to parents of small children. Parents must be taught that potential poisons must be kept out of reach of small children. Poisons must be securely closed with two-phase lids. All substances that are no longer needed must be disposed of in designated containers. They must never be transferred from the original to another container. The design of both active and passive preventive approaches presents us with a great challenge.
