Abstract		Prosthetic valve endocarditis represents an important clinical entity. The disease can be divided into early and late prosthetic valve endocarditis. Early after the operation the causative agents are predominantly hospital-acquired bacteria such as coagulase negative staphylococci, later on the pathogens are mainly viridans streptococci and staphylococci. In every febrile patient with prosthetic valve, a high grade of suspicion of endocarditis should be maintained. Diagnosis is established by blood cultures and echocardiography. Therapeutic regimens and indications for early surgery are presented in the article.
