Abstract     Gastro-esophageal reflux disease is a common, potentially serious condition that can greatly reduce patients quality of life. Heartburn and acid regurgitation are the predominant symptoms of this disease. Careful analysis of symptoms and history is key to diagnosis which can be supported by a trial of treatment. Clear endoscopic abnormalities are found in less than half of patients. Proton pump inhibitor are the most effective therapy, other drugs also available are antacids, H2 receptor antagonists and prokinetic agents. Antireflux surgery is as effective as long term proton pump inhibitor, but carry a higher risk for complications.
