Abstrakt		Antibiotics have been used for many decades for treatment and prophylaxis in medical and veterinary practice, agriculture and as food additives. Numerous bacteria became resistant to antibiotics due to their wide usage and frequent overuse and misuse. Rational antimicrobial use includes strong indications, optimal selection, dosage, duration, with minimum selective presure for resistance and the most cost-effective antimicrobial therapy. Continuous education of physicians and patients as well as control of antibiotic use in all fields of their usage are badly needed to optimize antibiotic therapy.
