Abstrakt     Hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) is a serious complication of end-stage liver cirrhosis with ascites characterized by marked abnormalities in arterial circulation and by renal failure. The diagnosis of HRS is currently based on exclusion of other causes of renal failure in cirrhotic patients. A simitar syndrome can also develop in patients with acute liver failure. Prognosis of patients with HRS is very poor. Liver transplantation is the only treatment that can cure end-stage cirrhosis and thus HRS, but is seldom applicable due to the short survival expectancy of most patients with HRS. Further developement in conservative methods of treatment is needed not only as a bridge to liver transplantation but also as a therapy for patients who are not candidates for transplantation.
