Abstrakt     Peripheral nerve injury is occurring relatively often as a part of upper extremity trauma, with significant conseguences for the patient and society. The primary focus in research and treatment of peripheral nerve injuries has traditionally been on the surgical reconstruction and, more recently, on peripheral biological processes such as posttraumatic neuronal death and axonal outgrowth. Over the last years, however a growing body of literature is suggesting that central nervous system plasticity is a key factor determining outcome after peripheral nerve injury. The importance of central ,factors influencing functional ozrtcome after nerve injury suggests that post-operative treatment should aim at maximizing the central processing of afferent information. Traditionally, sensory re-education aims at doing so. However, the recent insight into the functioning of the brain suggests a number of other or additional techniques that can be used to influence the central processing of afferent information.
