Abstract     Within the last two decades intensive research has been carried out into pain in children. Consequently we better understand children's pain, especially the nociceptive pathways and the harmful effects of pain in neonates and premature infants. There has been an improvement in our knowledge of the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the drugs used for pain relief in children. However, our knowledge of some agents used in pain management in children is still insufficient, especially their metabolism in the various age groups in childhood. With research we have gained valid and effective modes of pain management in children. In general, treatment of pain in children is still not optimal, chiefly because pain is not regularly assessed and frequently available strategies for pain management are not used. In addition available recommendations for pain treatment in children are not considered, nor is the co-operation between parents and medical staff effectively utilized in the management of pain in children.
