Abstract     Lack of general practitioners or family doctors and their preoccupation with mainly older population is the main reason why they are not interested treatment of preschool children. Exceptions are areas not covered with paediatricians, where children get faster treatment by general practitioners or family doctors. Author claims that Slovenia is better covered with family doctors, who are everywhere, but paediatricians are more available in urban areas. Therefore, parents make decision to visit more convenient family doctor instead of paediatrician, however they are aware that ediatrician would be professionally better choice. Decrease in natality and the same number of paediatricians and specialists in school medicine made them look after population older than 19 years of age. It means that school medicine doctors do not send their pants to family doctors but keep them as their patients. Because of low natality doctors are afraid to loose capitation. Extended professional board of paediatricians has to take more active part in the preparation of National HeaIth Care Program till the year 2000 and participate in coordination of setting up primary level paediatric offices considering the trends of the newborns.
