Abstract     The paper reviews the importance of two hepatotropic viruses, hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus, as pathogens in patients undergoing solid organ or bone marrow transplantation, their contribution to morbidity and mortality after transplantation, and the approach to the prevention and/or treatment of these pathogens. Since much more is known about hepatitis B and hepatitis C in liver and kidney transplantation than in bone marrow and heart transplantation, the first two transplant settings are discussed thoroughly. The prevalence of infection, the natural history of disease and current options for management are discussed, the information that is vital for rational decision about transplantation in patients infected with these two viruses.
