Abstract     Background: Physiotherapeutic approach to a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on long-term oxygen treatment (LTOT) is described. In the first part a theoretical explanation of disease and rehabilitation is presented. The second part is a study on compliance of patients with COPD in a rehabilitation process. Aim: COPD patients benefit from physical training. However, LTOT patients have very advanced disease, are mostly elderly and limited in mobility. Moreover, many are not motivated neither for their health nor for rehabilitation. Methods: Patients performed home based training consisted from breathing exercises and walking. At the beginning of the study and each month thereafter 6 minute walking test and dispnea assessment by count test and visual analogue scale were performed. Results: In the area of Kranj only 10 out of 64 LTOT patients were suitable for rehabilitation. On average, patients' compliance with rehabilitation program was sufficient. However, we didn't find expected benefit of rehabilitation on dispnea and physical endurance. Conclusions: Only limited part of LTOT patients (15%) is suitable for pulmonary rehabilitation program. However, compliance of suitable patients is sufficient.
