Abstract     Cardiac arrest usually causes neurological damage. Animal experiments revealed that induced hypothermia limits ischemia - reperfusion injury of brain cells. Beneficial effect of induced hypothermia is more substantial if hypothermia is induced as soon as possible following ROSC. Experiments also confirmed beneficial effects of hypothermia after aborted sudden cardiac death in humans. Patient is cooled down to core temperature between 32 and 34 dg. C for 24 hours. Practical approach to induced hypothermia is presented in the paper as nurse's role in inducing hypothermia after ROSC is very important.
