Abstract     Background. Trigger digits can be treated surgically using an open or percutaneous technique. Although the latter has been known for almost fifty years a renewed interest has emerged in the last decade when it proved to be equal to open technique. Methods and patients. Ninety-eight patients were treated by percutaneous release under local anethesia using a 21 gauge needle in the last three years with the minimum follow up of two months and maximum follow up of two and a half years. Two patienmts were lost to follow up after the first postoperative visit. Duration of postoperative pain, finger range of motion, strength and recurrency of triggering were observed. results. Among 98 patients with 129 trigger digits 89 (90,8%) had complete relief of their symptoms. One hundred and twenty digits (93%) were successfuly released. In nine digits (7%) the symptoms recurred. There were no lesions of important anatomic structures. All digits with recurrent triggering were successfuly released by open technique. Pain after the procedure lasts on average for 17 days. The results of the release in thumbs are just as good as in the other fingers. Conclusion. Percutaneous trigger finger release is simple, reliable and cheap. The learning curve is steep.
