Abstract     Background. The review article describes the epidemiology, causes, pathogenesis clinical picture and recent advances in pathophysiology and diagnosis of bacterial meningitis. Recommendations for empiric and specific antimicrobial therapy are given. The role of dexamethasone is evaluated and supportive therapy is described. Routine use of dexamethasone is recommended for Haemophylus influenzae meningitis. Conclusions. The authors give the recommendations for chemoprophylaxis as well as the present status of active immunization against the most common causes of acute bacterial meningitis in childhood. Ethical guestions in nursing care are not isolated, but present a composite part of everyday practice. Basic concepts were set by Hippocrates. F. Hightingale defined nursing care as a professional discipline, based on humanistic values. The values in nursing care are related to physical, psychological and social dimensions of man. In practice, psychological and social values and rights of man are most often neglected, i. e. respect of individual a personality and dignity, his/ her autonomy, worth, secrecy, intimacy, respect of pain, suffering, hope. We have to differ among ethics as a philosophical dcscipline the principles of which have universal value and morale which is changeable, relative to society, period, politics.
