Abstract     Music therapy is based on the fact that music with its conceptual and formal elements (among which rhythm is the most important) affects individual physical and mental state. Active group music therapy in psychiatry is based on the knowledge of group dynamic processes and uses musical technigues and musical material to enhance patient activity. Patient non-verbal musical communications create object relations, which in turn prop up his/her weak Ego. In the article, a concrete session of active music therapy on the Night Unit of Mental Health Centre in Ljubljana is described, and four different forms of group active music therapy illustrated: individual improvisation, imitation, musical interaction and group improvisation.
