Abstract		The elements of pathomorphological changes in obstructive and restrictive pulmonary diseases are presented. The consequence of them are pathophysiological changes leading to respiratory failure, i.e. incapacity of lungs to maintain normal values of oxygen and carbon dioxide in arterial blood. The passage from respiratory insufficiency to respiratory failure is also presented. Compensatory mechanisms of the organism to survive despire arterial hypoxemia ure described.
