Abstract     Home oxygen treatment opens up the possibility of normal physical and mental development for children with chronic respiratory insufficiency; it not only removes the risk of chronic hypoxia but also of long-term hospitalisation. In contrast with adult patients, in the majority of children oxygen treatment is eventually discontinued as growth and maturation of the diseased lungs lead up to the improvement in their function. In the selection of the patients, repeated non-invasive daily and nightly measurement of SaO2 or PaO2, the response of pulmonary arterial pressure to oxygen and child's development during a longer period of time are most important indices. In order home oxygen treatment to be successful, the child's parents need adequate motivation and preparation as well as diverse and continuous support. Oxygen eguipment should be adjusted to the child's need for movement. The most freguent indication for home oxygen treatment in children is bronchopulmonary dysplasia as intensive treatment enables the survival of smaller and less mature prematures. In Slovenia, we already have some experience with home oxygen treatment in children. They are not very numerous but very valuable.
