Abstrakt     Higher plasma lipid levels are among the more important risk factors for progressive development of atherosclerosis. Scientific efforts have been oriented toward acquring knowledge of lipid metabolism and the defects responsible for hyperlipidemias. Lipids ore a heterogenic group of substances with several biologic functions apart from serving as an energy source for the body. As Iipids are hydrophobic, they are transported in plasma in special vesicles named lipoproteins. The outer layer or coot is composed of phospholipids and special proteins, apolipoproteins. Like many other enzymes, transport proteins and various special receptors, apolipoproteins have a special function in lipid metabolism. After reviewing the basics of Iipid metabolism, the article states the most important primary and secondary dyslipidemias. The basic defects and factors as well as their clinical manifestations are also described.
