Abstract		The paper deals with emergency care of a patient with acute abdominal pain as seen from the nurse's perspective. Admission to the emergency clinic, preparation for examination and observation of the patient are described. Abdominal examination and assessment of the patient's status are presented in detail. Nursing problems arising from the typical signs of disease are defined. Acute abdominal pain interferes with activities of daily living. The most common nursing diagnoses present in patients who suffer from acute abdominal pain are discussed. The nursing form filled in on admission to the emergency clinic is an essential part of the nursing record, which contributes to efficient team work and quality care.
