Abstract		There are several ways to treat urinary stone disease. Some kind of treatment modality is needed when the spontaneous passage of stone seams unlikely. Most of the devices work on the production of shock waves. From the first clinical beginings (Chaussy 1980) the era of ESWL has begun. Indications are clear, based on large experiences. When the stone burdern is large combined treatment is mandatory. We present older, technically less demanding modalities and new sophisticated yet more expensive ones. Some data from the physics are explained to make the efficacy of different energy sources comparable.
