Abstract     Sleep is an active physiological process. On the average> a healthy elderly person sleeps seven hours a day with shorter phases of deep sleep and longer phases of light sleep. Patients with dementia sleep less; sleep disturbances present themselves as difficulties with filling asleep, waking up frequently during the night and disturbances of the circadian rhythm. In patients with dementia who suffer from sleep disorders, treatment with drugs as well as other measures can be employed. The latter are presented in this article since they are safer, more individually adaptable and most useful in non-institutional care.
