Abstract     The intermittent Lake Cerknica appears at the bottom of the karstic depression Cerknišl:o polje. The exchange of wet and dry periods influences the through flow of energy and the turnover of matter in the lake. The densely vegetated area of the lake supports high primary dproduction of the ecosystem and functions as a major sink for nutrients. Water level fluctuations present a heterogeneous hydrologic pattern resulting in a variety of habitats in time and space, which support high diversitv of species. The Lake Cerknica provides habitats for many protected species, which is the consequence of the naturalness as well as the uniqueness of the area.
