Abstract     The community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a frequent infectious disease and important cause of death, especially in elderly and those with underlying chronic diseases. Recently several novelties have appeared in the management of CAP on which rely new Slovenian guidelines. Medical history and physical examination are core stones for evaluation of patients' risk and severity of disease. Severity assessment is recommended as the key to planning appropriate management both in the community and in hospital. The choice of antibiotics is also based on patient's underlying diseases that may cause more severe course of the disease and may be related to the infection with wider spectrum of more resistant pathogens. Beside antibiotic treatment patients need also adequate diet, antipyretics, analgesia and appropriate treatment of concomitant diseases. Patients with suspected CAP should be advised not to smoke, to rest, and to drink plenty of fluids. Prevention strategies include influenza and pneumococcal vaccination.
