Abstract     The thickness of the granular layer of the epidermis can be an important criterion in the study of the keratinization process. Semiquantitative measurements ot the number of rows of keratizatinocytes in each layer of epidermis were carried out by applying a simple square lattce system. Measurements performed in the granular and Malpighi's layers yielded the following average values: for the healthy skin 1.56 and 7.37, for hypertrophic actinic keratosis 1.28 and 12.57, for atrophic 0.93 and 5.30, for lichenoid 1.57 and 8.98. The relative values of the granular and Malpighi's layers expressed in percentages were as follows: healthy skin 17.46 to 82.54; hypertrophic actinic keratosis 9.24 to 90.76; atrophic actinic keratosis 14.95 to 85.05; and lichenoid actinic keratosis 14.89 to 85.11. When compared with healthy skin, in all pathohistological types of actinic keratosis, there exists a statistically significant relative reduction of the granular layer. According to these data the hypothesis can be put forward, that the keratinization proces, in all typc, of actinic keratosis rakes place according to the principle of proliferative hyperkeratosis.
