Abstract     The importance of endocrine function of adipose tissue is evident by the metabolic consequences of both adipose tissue excess and deficiency. This review addresses the hormone release from the adipose tissue and discusses a selection of changes in secretory function of adipocytes as found in the obese population. Disturbed hormone release due to fat tissue excess or obesity is associated with insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, dyslepidemia, hypertension and proinflamatory states, all contributing to the increase in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome which has reached epidemic proportions.
