Abstract     Hypertension is one of the important components of the metabolic syndrome (MS), which also comprises obesity, disturbed glucose and insulin metabolism and dyslipidaemia. Hypertension, identifiable in childhood, is associated with cardiovascular diseases in adulthood. The major risk factors for the development of hypertension in childhood are obesity and a family history of hypertension, indicating the importance of environmental and genetic factors in the genesis of hypertension. In recent years, an increase in both AH and MS has been observed, along with a marked increase in the prevalence of childhood obesity. The relationship between hypertension and the MS is complex, most probably because of its multifactorial nature. If hypertension is associated with other components of the MS, an individual's cardiovascular risk as well as the risk of type 2 diabetes is increased. Clinicians must identify children who are at risk or already have the manifestations of the MS, especially among hypertensive children, at a very early stage. A balanced diet and physical activity, along with the use of low doses of antihypertensive medications in resistant cases, must be considered in these children to control the blood pressure as well as to reduce the co-morbidity risk. Our most important task is to promote a healthy lifestyle.
