Abstract     The metabolic syndrome (MS), first described in 1988, is characterized by an increased risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The pathogenesis of the MS is not completely understood, but a proinflammatory state, with elevated proinflammatory cytokines (tumour necrosis factor-a and interleukin-6) and acute-phase reactants (CRP, fibrinogen), plays an important role. In infectious diseases in recent years the MS has been most often recognised in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).
