Abstract     Main types of subterranean aquatic environments are interstitial waters and cave and fissure waters, but in any system a number of different habitats may develop. The biodiversity in a habitat is declining with growing severity of living conditions (towards emphasized„cave conditions").Troglobionts exhibit high competition vigor in clean subterranean waters while surface animals are stronger in food rich habitats; therefore they may outcompete troglobionts in sinking rivers or in organically polluted subterranean waters. The increasing species ratio epigean/troglobiotic indicates growing organic pollution. According to data from 1978, over 1000 species (the number is growing rapidly; 685 species known only from Balkans in 2000) i.e. ca 8% of all aquatic animals in Europe was known to be specialized to groundwater. Some most important groups and species of groundwater fauna are presented in the text.
