Abstrakt     Central and periferal nervous system damage are an important causes of morbidity and mortality after an openheart surgery. The risk for perioperative cerebro-vascular insult is estimated to 2 % to 6 % and is presumed to be underestimated. According to USA data, patients with perioperative CVI have high mortality (up to 36 %) and the survivors usually become chronic patients with poor life quality and represent logistic and financial burden to society. The most important causes of perioperative nervous system damage are embolisation and hypoperfusion. Addressing this issue demands an interdisciplinary approach to high risk patients thus enabeling them fast rehabilitation and good quality of life after cardiac surgery.
