Abstrakt | Popliteal artery aneurysms are rare, although they are the commonest amongst peripheral aneurysms. They are more common in elderly men. Usually their etiology is atherosclerotic. Rarely they are associated with trauma or medical procedures. Often they are associated with abdominal aortic aneurysm and connective tissue disorders. Although they can be asymptomatic, they usually manifest themselves with thrombosis or distal emboli. Rarely they show sings of local compression or rupture. The diagnosis is established with clinical and ultrasound examination. Before the onset of treatment arteriography and rarely computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging is performed. Most of the authors recommend elective operation before the onset of complications. The standard procedure is medial approach with proximal and distal ligation of the aneurysm and reconstruction of bypass. Better yet technically more complexed is posterior approach where the aneurysm can be removed as a whole. This approach is not suitable for all popliteal artery aneurysms. Recently, endovascular treatment with percutaneously insertion of a stent graft throught the aneurysm is becoming an important alternative to surgical treatment. | |
