Abstract     In retrospective clinical study, we have examined 59 patients (67 eyes) with retinal breaks, which have been treated by photocoagulation in the period from the beginning of 1983 until December 1991. Before the treatment 54 patients had subjective symptoms of retinal breaks (80.6 per cent ) while at the first check-up after the treatment symptoms were still noted only in 33 patients (49.25 per cent .). 18 patients (26.8 per cent .) had history of trauma or severe physical strain. 33 patients (49.25 per cent .) were hospitalised during the treatment while 34 patients (50:75 per cent .) were treated in out-patient clinic. On treatment, retinal detachment was found in 7 patients (10.4 per cent .). In 42 patients (62.7 per cent .) additional retinal degenerations were also found.Final results show that: 1. Additional treatment of primary breaks by photocoagulation after one month was needed in 6 patients (9 per cent ). 2. New breaks appeared in 7 patients (10.5 per cent .). 3. None of the patients had retinal detachment after laser treatment of either primary or secondary breaks, and therefore additional operative treatment was alleviated. 4. We have observed no complications associated or caused by laser treatment. We believe that good sealing of the break or associated detachment by three or more rows of burns is essential for success of the treatment. Regular check-up examinations for life are very important, as are education of the patients regarding limitations of their physical activities and significance of their subjective symptoms.
