Abstrakt		In comparison with transplantation of other organs, experimental transplantation of small intestine is a technically simple operative procedure. In dogs and pigs, mesenteric blood vessels are wide enough allowing the use of standard surgical technique. The same holds for graft taking. If, however, rat is used as an experimental model, a microsurgical technique should be employed and an aortic cuff obtained to restore arterial anastomosis. Systemic venous drainage is normally used in all experiments. The studies conducted to date do not report on the occurence of encephalopathy, which should probably be attributed to the short survival. It should be emphasized that there are only few studies on the survival rate primarily from the surgical point to view. The operative technique developed to Monchik and Russell in 1971 has been widely accepted. Scientists have mostly been focused on the histologic and immunologic aspects of the procedure. However, with prolonged graft survival owing to improved immunosuppression, the problems related to small intestine transplantation have shifted to the technical and operative area.
