Abstract     The authors made a systematie survey of impression trays for use in prosthodontics. An impression tray is adevice that is used to carry, confine, and control impression material while an impression is being made. There are two kinds of impression trays:stock trays are made in a factory; custom trays are mostly made in a dental laboratory. Special impression trays are available for dentate jaws, for shortened dental arches, for edentulous jaws. There are also impression trays for simultaneous impression of both jaws. Impression trays differ in size and shape, thus allowing the dentist to make a good impression, which is a prerequisite for an accurate master east. Impression trays should be rigid and should provide sufficient retention for the impression material (perforations, rim-Iock design). The use of custom trays guarantees greater precision of both the master east and the final prosthesis or restoration. The authors recommend using custom trays in difficult clinical situations, for complicated prosthetie work, and after repeated failure to obtain a satisfactory impression with a stock tray.
