Abstract		On the base of literatrne study and out-patient department health statistics for the year 1990, the article gives a survey of the symptoms owing to which the patients visit the practitioner, of the gastrointestinal diseases treated in the practitioner's out-patient department and of the referrals to the specialist in the hospital owing to these diseases. A comparison of standardized degree of mortality and degree of referrals owing to gastrointestinal diseases in selected European countries is made which shows that Republic of Slovenia stands out regarding the degree of mortality as well as the degree of referrals, considering the sample.
