Abstrakt     Background. Obesity in childhood is a condition difficult to define. It varies in its course and evolution, has important but uncertain effects, is multifactorial in etiology, and presents great difficulty in treatment. Childhood obesity is currently defined as a triceps and/or subscapular skinfold in excess of the 85th percentile for children and adolescents of the same age and sex. Conclusions. In general treatment of obesity is a complex and long-term process with limited success. The programs with any consistent pattern of success aim at weight control, but not necessarily weight loss, and offer combined nutritional education, dietary modification, increased physical activity and behaviour modification. Treatment of children makes sense particularly for those at relatively high risk of constant obesity. Therefore, the main objective is prevention of obesity and treatment should be considered only as a second choice.
